My Recent Morning& Evening Thoughts & Devotions
on GENESIS 22

“The Lord gives
And the Lord takes away
Blessed be the name of The Lord.”

For almost two weeks now my morning and evening devotions seem to have been put under a holding pattern as I have found myself being brought back again and again to the heart-wrenching story of Abraham’s faith being tested when he was told by God to sacrifice his one and only son, his beloved Isaac as an offering in the mountain of Moriah. In as much as I try to let my mind dwell on other lovely passages from the other books of the Bible, I find myself unable to move on from Genesis 22. And the more I allow myself to be drawn to the story, the more I find myself being led to discover newer truths, beautiful insights which previously escaped me in my devotions over the same passage years back. It is so true that if our hearts are truly bent on seeking God and as we set our hearts on delighting in Him, He does “speak” to us by lovingly and personally giving certain verses which do not only reveal the depth of His affections for us but also reveals the beauty of the grand truths of this magnificent love He lavishes on us. How delightful it is when God sweetly reveals to our hearts certain aspects of His truth!  Oh yes, God does reveal His hidden truths – but this we learn God does to us one at time. Our Father truly gives His Spirit to guide us into all truth but He does not do it all at once. The Author of our faith chooses to not reveal more than what our hearts, our faith can handle at the present moment. Why? God knows it would be foolish to give us all the answers to the things we want to know when we demand them and He knows it won’t do us any good if He reveals everything that His love and wisdom has prepared for us for He knows we can’t handle it. We, in our limited understanding, can’t handle the whole truth. It is only as we choose to WALK WITH HIM IN DEVOTION, FAITH and OBEDIENCE  does God reveal to us glimpses of His truth, His will, His plans one day at a time. And God has promised to disclose to us, to reveal to us “The Secrets of His Loving Heart” one at time as our faith becomes able and ready to embrace a certain nugget of truth which He chooses to reveal during a given moment of our life-journey.

OUR UNFAILING HOPE
Unraveling The Secrets of His Heart

Yes, we can be fully assured of that promise. And this ought to be our confidence, OUR HOPE:

…that ALONG THE WAY Our Father’s LOVE WILL SHOW US MORE AND MORE OF WHAT LOVE IS as we find the satisfying love we are searching for to be actually all present in Him. HE will and HIS WILL will forever suffice.
…And that ALONG THE WAY, HIS LOVE WILL ALWAYS BE THERE TO TEACH OUR WAYWARD HEARTS the very secrets of His heart and that ALONG THE WAY HIS LOVE WILL NEVER, EVER, FAIL TO GUIDE US in all of His truth, in all of His ways and in the path of His righteousness for His Name’s sake. For the sake of Love Himself.

And so the question now for each one of us is this – Will we daily choose to set our hearts to journey ALONG THIS WAY, along THIS WAY OF FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE, along THIS WAY OF TRUTH AND RIGHTEOUSNESS?  And if we mean to give our “yes”, our “I do” to the Lover of our souls, then sooner or later, as we journey along this highway of faith we shall find our hearts traveling one dark night along the slopes of our live’s own Moriahs, stopping mid-track as the heavens, the skies call out to us,

“Take with you your only son –
yes, ISAAC WHOM YOU LOVE SO MUCH
and go there to the land of Moriah and
SACRIFICE HIM THERE upon one of the mountains
which I’ll point out to you!”
– Gen22:2 (TLB)

Image

ALONG THIS WAY OF ABNEGATION
In the Slopes of Moriah

And so each one of us will one day stand in the foot of “The Mountain of Testing” carved especially for us. And in that place, we will find that there will be no circumventing or escaping the questions we need to answer before the One whom we call The Lord of our lives.

– Will we heed the summons of THE JEALOUS SKY to surrender and offer up the very thing we love the most?
~ Will we take God’s command in faith even if it doesn’t seem to make any sense at all and even if it will bring unbearable pain and loss (Something just has to die in us, you see.)
~ Will we walk towards the summit where the altar of offering and sacrifice is to be done and in darkness trust the “Hiddenness of His Ways” and in obedience proceed to carry forth His demand?

And allow me to once again quote here Elisabeth Elliot, an American missionary and an author whom I greatly admire.

“A thousand questions cluttered my mind. But THE QUESTION TO PRECEDE ALL OTHERS, which finally determines the course of our lives is:

~ What do I really want?
~ Was it to love what God commands and to desire what He promises?
~ Do I want what I wanted, or did I want what He wanted, no matter what it might cost?

Until the will and the affections, are brought under the authority of Christ, we have not began to understood, let alone to accept, His Lordship. The Cross, as it enters the heart’s affections, will reveal the heart’s truth. My heart, I knew, would be forever a lonely hunter unless settled “where true joys are to be found.”
– Elisabeth Elliot, Passion and Purity

I believe whenever God brings a child of His in this mountain of testing, He never forces His way upon His child. Along the way the choice is always left to us. The choice is always ours to make. But the choice we make will affect and define our future.

“And if we are set upon the pursuit of God, He will sooner or later bring us to this test…we will be brought one by one to the testing place…At that testing place there will be no dozen possible choices for us – just one and an alternative – but our whole future will be conditioned by the choice we make.”
– A.W. Tozer

And to those who surrender to the call, He abundantly gives His grace. He will enable every child of His to make the difficult choice. He knows we can’t do it on our own. He knows it takes grace, and only grace, to slay our heart’s most precious thing. And grace He gives abundantly still as we are left to die inwardly at the wake of our abnegation, the surrender, the sacrifice of our beloved Isaacs.

LETTING GO
“And so now I put  you in the altar…”

And so there goes my thoughts as He “urges” me to extend my alone-time with Him (which are my times of personal devotions – “my sweet precious moments with Him at the wake of dawn, dusk or late evening”) in the slopes of Moriah as an unseen spectator to the drama, the tragedy unfolding between the age-old Partriarch Abraham and his one and only son Isaac. As I devote myself to thinking through this passage for the past days until today, (and until God knows when..I can only happily and thankfully oblige 🙂 ) it is as if God is relentlessly pursuing me once again to lovingly unravel a facet of Love’s truth which He wants me now to learn and live out. And Genesis 22 undeniably holds a painful truth to be learned and lived through by those who intend to love, obey, and follow the Lord. Honestly, I wish I can be protected from such an experience! For who wants to voluntarily sign up to experience such agony, such a painful loss?! Really, I wouldn’t…It is grace that brings me here in my own Moriahs! The place, time and object of our sacrifice can never be of our own choosing. He determines our Isaacs to be offered and when they ought to be surrendered and “slayed” from within us. But, you see, the more I study the story of Abraham & Isaac closely, the more faith tells me this agonizing truth can ultimately be a most-rewarding experience when chosen to be lived out.

Yes, I believe His revealing of the truth – “to lose is to gain” is not for nothing. It is not a truth which He reveals to me so I can have something profound to think about in my quiet mornings and evenings and to have another moving theme to write about, to blog about and to write poems about. I know HE SHOWS ME HIS TRUTH SO I CAN ACT, LIVE IN, AND LIVE THROUGH HIS TRUTH. And in that manner, I know He protects me from buying the world’s belief systems, the norms, or the erroneous thought patterns, those lies that are out to jeopardize the future of those who choose and live through them. The Moriah experiences that we often think are made to simply break and tear our hearts actually hold the truth that will build and restore our hearts anew.

So, here I am again, searching my heart for the Isaacs I need to surrender and sacrifice to God and as I “slay” and  offer them at the altar,  the words below come rushing forth from my pen. The verses of the poem are written as the thoughts ramble on in my head. So there isn’t really much time for editing and improving the construction of the poem. I choose to share it now here in my blog as it is – hoping its simplicity captures the rawness of my heart’s sentiments as I write each and every word.

So with this poem, I offer all the Isaacs I cherish and treasure so dearly and most affectionately: offering them all to God moment-by-moment. Forever trusting in His Unfailing and Everlasting Love.

“Letting Go”
January 29, 2013

To lose my dearest, my heart’s most precious thing
Is to gain the blessedness of possessing nothing
And yet in this lonesome valley You grant me the ultimate blessing
You have become the answer to this mighty Longing, the One Thing
The One in whom my searching heart now finds my all, my everything
My highest and sweetest reward when I make this painful offering

To be gazing now at Your beauty is unlike anything
There alone flows grace, faith, hope &love in all things and for all things
May I ever seek Your face as You lead me in the path of my Lord, my King
I love You above all and this I shall remember in every added earthly blessing —
To delight in You is to always and truly be in want for nothing
Yes, this heart of mine will be satisfied, be content in whatever life shall bring

Matt 6:33

Let me end by sharing a few more quotes taken from my favorite chapter (Ch.2 “The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing”) in A.W. Tozer’s timeless classic “THE PURSUIT OF GOD”.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kindgom of heaven. – Matt. 5:3

THE WAY TO A DEEPER KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IS THROUGH THE LONELY VALLEYS OF SOUL POVERTY AND ABNEGATION OF ALL THINGS. The blessed ones who possess the Kingdom are they who have repudiated every external thing and have rooted from their hearts all sense of possessing. These are the “poor in spirit.” They have reached an inward state paralleling the outward circumstances of the common beggar in the streets of Jerusalem; that is what the word “poor” as Christ used it actually means. These blessed poor are no longer slaves to the tyranny of things. They have broken the yoke of the oppressor; and this they have done not by fighting but by surrendering. Though free from all sense of possessing, they yet possess all things. “Theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
– Tozer

I know that quote is quite a mouthful! 🙂 .. If you have the time, do go through the entire chapter. I guarantee it will really bless you so..

HIS LOVE’S CONSTANT REFRAIN

The Nearness of You
#eveningworship

 Image

Beautiful LOVE songs keep on playing in my mind on this lovely evening!! :)

Enjoying the moment..Savoring his nearness.

image

No, no, no not Mr. Darcy’s nearness! (How I wish I could! Hahaha :) ..He still is for me the most dashing man of the Victorian Era, whether in fact or fiction. Definitely “My All-tIme Favorite Gent of The Regency Period”!).

But this post is not about Mr. FItzwilliam Darcy.

I’m just truly grateful now to the Lord 🙂 His nearness is truly my good! :)

Whom have I in heaven but You?
And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.”

“But as for me, the nearness of God is my good;
I have made the Lord GOD my refuge,
That I may tell of all Your works.”

– Psalm 73:25,28 NASB

And, while we are at it, let me say Lord – You are way, way, better than my dashing Mr. Darcy!
Hahaha! When girls talk of Darcy, there is no telling when they’ll stop 🙂 :)

Enjoy this music video of Norah Jones’ “The Nearness of You” (click the link below. Can anyone please help me how to embed videos in blog posts? :) My technologically challenged left brain hasn’t quite figured that out yet, hahaha! :) . And girls, the clips culled from the 2005 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s well-loved classic “Pride and Prejudice” are especially for you. :)

This song has become a favorite secular-love-song-turned-worship-song of mine since February of last year..:)

HAVE A LOVELY EVENING!

Let His love songs for you always play and resonate to the deepest recesses of your heart :)

Savor your intimate moments with Him!

The Nearness of You – Norah Jones/Pride and Prejudice 2005

By the way, it is the 200th Anniversary of “Pride and Prejudice”!
That figures why tonight’s evening worship is themed as such. 🙂

SNIPPETS FROM THE-BARD-OF-AVON

LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST

William Shakespeare

I have great fondness for this play.

The banters. The verbal wit. The humor.

Just love it!

Some of my favorite parts:

1. THE OPENING ACT
King Ferdinand of Navarre gives a rousing speech to his men that makes the book sound like it is a history play and the men are about to go into battle.

“Therefore brave conquerors — for so you are,
That war against your own affections
And the huge army of the world’s desires.”
– Act1, Sc1

Only about 35 lines after do we finally discover the silliness to which the King is rousing his men. 🙂

Image

2. THE KING AND HIS MEN ARE IN LOVE WITH PRINCESS OF FRANCE AND HER LADIES.
The scene when the men discover that they are all in love — is this anything but delightful?

Image

3. THE WISDOM OF THE WOMEN AND THE SILLINESS OF MEN.

I love the Princess’s response to the King’s courtliness.

KING: Fair Princess, welcome to the court of Navarre.
PRINCESS: Fair I give you back again, and welcome I have not yet. The roof of this court is too high to be yours, and welcome to the wide fields too base to be mine.
– Act2, Sc1

Image

4. A CLASSIC BANTER

ROSALINE: This proves you wise and rich, for in my eye–
BEROWNE: (finishing her joke) I am a fool, and full of poverty.
– Act 5, Sc2

Image

5. THE HUMOR
LOL:
HOLOFERNES: Via, goodman Dull! thou hast not spoken no word all this while.
DULL: Nor understood none neither, sir.
– Act5, Sc1

“THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID!”:
KING: This maid will not serve your turn, sir.
COSTARD: This maid will serve my turn, sir.
– Act 1, Sc1

image

5. THE ENDING.

It’s not what I expected but all those final speeches are just beautiful, so beautiful.

LINCOLN: WHAT MANNER OF MAN ~On Reverence, Humility, and Submission to The Lord

LINCOLN: WHAT MANNER OF MAN
Daily Excerpts

Abraham Lincoln’s words serve to be devotions in themselves, points to reflect on as they show truths and principles which can be learned and applied individually and as a nation even up to this very day. I will try my best to share excerpts each day, excerpts culled from some of his personal writings which I find the most thought provoking, words which can provide us with sketches of the admirable character of the great American President, of a man of God whose integrity, humility and faith proved to be the groundwork of such a noble life and a magnificent legacy.

A NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER & FASTING
On Acknowledging God; Reverence, Submission & Humility Before The Lord

“..the FEAR OF THE LORD is the Beginning of WISDOM..”

Image

After the Union army was DEFEATED at the FIRST BATTLE OF THE BULL RUN President Abraham Lincoln declared A NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING:

“It is fit and becoming in all people, at all times, to acknowledge and revere the Supreme Government of God; to bow in humble submission to His chastisement; to confess and deplore their sins and transgressions in the full conviction that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and to pray, with all fervency and contrition, for the pardon of their past offenses, and for a blessing upon their present and prospective action.
And whereas when our own beloved country, once, by the blessings of God, united, prosperous and happy, is now afflicted with faction and civil war, it is peculiarly fit for us to recognize the hand of God in this terrible visitation, and in sorrowful remembrance of our own faults and crimes as a nation and as individuals, to humble ourselves before Him and to pray for His mercy…that the inestimable boon of civil and religious liberty, earned under His guidance and blessing by the labors and sufferings of our fathers, may be restored.”

ABOUT THE FIRST BATTLE OF THE BULL RUN</div>

 A Short Historical Background

Image

On July 21, 1861 the First Battle of Bull Run occurred. It was the first real major conflict of the American Civil War. A Union army, consisting of 28,000 men, commanded by General McDowell, fought 33,000 Confederates under General Beauregard. The Union army, under pressure to crush the rebellion in the South, marched towards Richmond, but met the Confederate forces coming north from Manassas, a Southern base.

At the beginning of the five hour battle the Union soldiers had the Confederates on the retreat, except for one brigade commanded by General Jackson. Due to Jackson’s ability to hold his ground and his stubbornness, the men saw him similar to a stone wall, hence the nickname “Stonewall” Jackson. Thanks to Jackson the Confederates were able to hold out until General Johnston showed up with 9000 reinforcements to help out Beauregard near Henry House Hill. The arrival changed the course of the battle and soon the Union soldiers were fleeing back to Washington. However, because of the disorganization of Beauregard’s army, they could not pursue McDowell any further.

The battle proved that this was not going to be a one sided war for either side, as was predicted. The casualties soared to 2,900 killed, wounded, captured, or missing for McDowell’s army and 2,000 for Beauregard’s. The battle spurred a sense of victory in the South, pushing them on, and in the North a feeling for revenge.

TRUSTING DIVINE PROVIDENCE

Image

After LOSING the Second Battle of Bull Run, Lincoln wrote his famous Meditation on the Divine Will:

“The will of God prevails. In great contests each party claims to act in accordance with the will of God. Both may be, and one must be wrong. God can not be for and against the same thing at the same time. In the present civil war it is quite possible that God’s purpose is something different from the purpose of either party — and yet the human instrumentalities, working just as they do, are of the best adaptation to effect His purpose.
I am almost ready to say this is probably true — that God wills this contest, and wills that it shall not end yet. By His mere quiet power, on the minds of the now contestants, He could have either saved or destroyed the Union without a human contest. Yet the contest began. And having begun He could give the final victory to either side any day. Yet the contest proceeds.”

“LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup;
you have made my lot secure.”
-Psalm 16:5

“Lord, thank You for this beautiful day! Whatever shall come my way today, I know I’ll find my heart praising and thanking you all day long. I know that whatever happens is ASSIGNED by You. Every experience that awaits me is measured and controlled for my good. Help me to keep a quiet heart if and when there will be delays, whenever timing will be thrown off, or when interruptions shall occur for I know all these are not for nothing. You have assigned me my portion, my cup. My lot is secure. And so my heart can be at peace. For You, my Father, is in charge…My only prayer is may I willingly accept what you allot for me today, knowing that Eternal love is wiser than I am and, Father, may I continue to enjoy periods of intimacy with You. I live for these moments, you know. And these moments shall bring calm assurance to my heart  for I know You are in control. You make all the difference. You make all things beautiful!”

MAKING THE MOST OF SOMEBODY SELLING LIGHT BULBS

CLAIRE DE LUNE, YET ALL ALONE.

“A lovely moonlit night, but I am alone.  Shall I resent the very moonlight itself because my lover is somewhere else?… The phone rings.  Oh!  Maybe it will be he!  It’s somebody selling light bulbs.  Shall I be rude because he ought to have been somebody else?… I know all about this kind of response.  I’ve been there many times.  Something I wrote to Jim once must have revealed my resentment, for he wrote, ‘LET NOT OUR LONGING SLAY THE APPETITE OF OUR LIVING’ That was exactly what I had let it do.”  – Elisabeth Elliot

FOUR WEDDINGS & A FUNERAL

Image

No.

ACtually, it was..

“A WEDDING AND FOUR FUNERALS”

Happy to have found out that a batchmate of mine who had been praying to get hitched for as long as we could all remember finally tied the knot very recently. God bless you guys Irene Albarillo Bisquera and your spouse and the years ahead of the two of you! 🙂

On the flipside – 4 deaths in a row for me this past 2 weeks..the first, was of a close college friend’s dad. We all adored the humble and generous man, a well-loved Tito by everyone. The other, of a very young mom of 4 whom I visited at the iCU hours before she died last Sunday. Had been brain dead and had managed on life support. She came from one of the poor families in a place I visit every Sunday…Hemorrhagic Stroke. It wasn’t easy praying with and comforting her young children wracked with grief…That was really a “barricade” moment for me. I mean, it made me realize there are much bigger pains than my own; bigger perhaps my own pains seemed to me because i was too self-absorbed to pay attention to the concerns of others. Made me realize the importance of relationships and family and life. Yesterday, I was told of the death of my Lola-Tita and of the dad of a very close friend. it has been a very sobering 2 weeks. Makes me reflective until now.

RED&BLACK

RED&BLACK
My Journals – “Scarlett” & “Noir”

Image

“Red – the blood of angry men!
Black – the dark of ages past!
Red – a world about to dawn!
Black – the night that ends at last!”
– Enjolras

Now, that is why my 2013 Journals come in red & black. 🙂 ..I know, I know, what you are thinking – She has totally gone off the deep end here. Is she plotting the next French Revolution?! ..She must be lovesick over Enjolras! – or perhaps – Big deal! Like I care!! Just another LesMis fan gone overboard!

But, hey, I haven’t lost my marbles. Let’s just put it this way – I bring myself back to Enjolras and the “Friends of the ABC Cafe”, those brave young schoolboys when the lone Marius in me wishes to linger in the garden of Rue Plumet with his beloved Cosette! (And now, you go – Huh?! I told you she’s gone nuts! – Hahaha!). I’m not trying to be the heroic Don Juan – it is just a way of reminding myself daily that “others go first, and I ought to go last” and to stay committed to my convictions. Truth of the matter, the human heart, my heart,  tends to be tuned and written like Marius’ passionate cry:

“Red…I feel my soul on fire!
Black…My world if she’s not there!
Red…The color of desire!
Black…The color of despair”
– Marius

And so when I’m smitten with my own plans, own dreams for me, myself, and I – my own desires which must be put off for the moment when a higher duty calls, when the love sick Marius gets the better of me, then I have a little something each day to help me get back to the “Enjolras” stance.

Of course, one fine day Marius will have his heart’s desire realized. Well and good. Something to look forward to.

But, some are just called to be the street urchin Gavroche or the revolutionary leader Enjolras – and they must inwardly die each day “on the lonely barricade at dawn”. Let Patria be their beloved mistress.

Either way, whether your fate is that of Marius’ or Enjolras’ (in a manner of speaking) we must first die. Inwardly. Die to our own desires. Deny ourselves and take up our rifles. And so that way, we live to die in order to actually find REAL LIFE .. 🙂 That, my fellow “friends of ABC Cafe” (again, in a manner of speaking) is THE SILVER LINING in each “bloody” price we pay, and in every “black cloud” in the horizon. 🙂

Okay, okay, I surrender to your claims – I have gone off the deep end once more! Or twice more! Been at it since last night, haha. The trying hard pseudo-philosopher Voltaire strikes again! haha! ..thanks for putting up with me.
